(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A study based on cell phone location data suggests that whenever COVID-19 restrictions are eased in Illinois and across the country, there's a corresponding rise in the infection rate.
The study compared cell phone location data showing when people came into close contact with others at times when COVID-19 restrictions were implemented and then eased.
The data strongly suggests infection rates rise each time restrictions are eased, Sean Lansing, director of client strategy at TOP Data, tells WBBM Newsradio.
Lansing says the data doesn't show whether people were taking precautions — such as wearing face coverings when they came into close contact with more people — to limit the spread of COVID-19.
He says the data also doesn't show whether the protests following the death of George Floyd might have had any effect on COVID-19 infection rates.
