The Washington Middle School girl’s basketball teams played their championship games at West Aurora High School Thursday evening, but their biggest fans weren't there.

"It's upsetting knowing that it's their last game and we're not allowed to go inside and watch them, but I understand why they're making the rules the way they are,” said parent Shannon Highsmith. “But it's still sad.”

In a statement, District 129 said it's being diligent about following the recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health regarding COVID-19 and limiting large-scale, extra-curricular events when possible.

Hazel Olmeda has been to every single one of her daughter's games and says there are other ways the district could have been preventative.

"At least maybe limit it to one person per child or immediate family. They're eighth grade and seventh grade, they don't understand this stuff."

Though unable to attend, parents were able to watch the game through a livestream.

"It's just so sad for them, you know, they worked this hard to get this far and now the bleachers are gonna be empty, who are they playing for?" asked Olmeda.

District 129 also postponed the Excellence in Education Banquet, Wrestling Banquet, Cheer Banquet and Upward Bound Meeting until further notice.
