CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Attorney General's Office is investigating accusations of vote-buying against supporters of a run-off candidate in the 25th Ward aldermanic race.
The accusation by the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Human Rights is that gift cards were traded for votes on behalf of candidate Byron Sigcho-Lopez.
The group notified the attorney general's office, Cook County state's attorney's office and the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.
An aide to Sigcho-Lopez, Zoe Chan, said the candidate denies any role.
"No part of the program -- neither its planning nor its execution -- was conducted by our campaign," she wrote in an e-mail to WBBM.
A Chicago Board of Election Commissioners spokesperson said the board first received complaints involving the gift cards two weeks ago. The claims resurfaced Tuesday in and around the polling place at 1358 S. Morgan St., where five voters complained.
The state's attorney's office also confirms that it has been notified.
