CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It is awards season again in the world of radio.
WBBM Newsradio is proud to announce that it was the chosen recipient of three 2020 regional Edward R. Murrow awards in the Large Market radio category from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA).
The awards include Overall Excellence, Best Newscast, and Best Breaking News Coverage. The region includes stations in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
The Overall Excellence award was based on stories produced by WBBM Newsradio during the 2019 calendar year, including breaking news, continuing coverage, newscasts and feature reporting.
"We have an incredibly talented group of journalists who pride themselves on keeping Chicagoans informed. Our anchors, reporters, editors, writers and producers work tirelessly to provide the most up-to-date information that impacts the everyday lives of our listeners. And I can’t imagine any newsroom more adept when major breaking news hits," said Ron Gleason, WBBM's News Director and Brand Manager.
WBBM Newsradio was awarded Best Breaking News Coverage for its coverage of Chicago Teachers' Strike and Best Newscast for its 2 p.m. show on July 16, 2019, which included breaking news of a federal judge ordering R. Kelly be held without bond on sex crime charges.
The awards were announced Tuesday. Regional award winners will move on to the national round of the competition.
The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971.
