(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The west suburban village of River Forest is looking at thinning its deer population after numerous complaints from residents
Village Administrator Eric Palm tells WBBM Newsradio in the past you might see one to three deer in a residential area near Thatcher Woods. Today, he said, there may be 12 or 15.
The animals have become a public safety issue, partly because they wander into traffic.
There are health concerns, as well, he said, because deer can carry diseases and ticks.
The village is working with the county and DNR. They will first count the deer to try to determine how many would be considered too many deer in the area.
If the herd is thinned it would not happen until December.
The village has had more than 60 complaints about the deer, some for damage to gardens and trees the deer are feeding on.
