WESTERN SPRINGS, ILL. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Many Memorial Day parades have been canceled because of the coronavirus but one western suburb is making sure it still honors two special veterans.

World War II Vets Seedy Ulrich and Walt Bergenthal were supposed to be in the parade thrown by VFW Post 107-78, as they have for more than three decades.

The cancellation of the VFW Annual Memorial Day Parade in Western Springs got Vietnam War veteran and friend Bruce Harken thinking about another way to honor them so he’s organized a car caravan.

They’ll make sure to maintain social distancing by putting 94-year-old Seedy and 93-year-old Walt on the sidewalk near Veterans Memorial Park and keeping everyone in their cars.

Harken is working with the village’s police department to organize the caravan on Memorial Day.

He’s not sure how many cars to expect but said they’ll begin lining up at 9:30 a.m. before rolling at 11 a.m.

So far it’s a surprise to Seedy and Walt, who’ve been friends since grade school and still live next door to each other.

Harken said they’re both in good health and share the sports section of the newspaper daily.
