CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Aside from groundhog predictions, there have been few signs of spring in Chicago, until now: Rainbow Cone has opened on Western Avenue in Beverly for its 94th season.

Opening day temperatures in the 20s couldn't stop Frank and Ronny Pastewski from lining up to buy large rainbow cones and carry-out containers for their in-laws.

What keeps them coming back after 50 years? The Pastewskis say the cones are fresh. They stood near the exit door eating the ice cream quickly, although not nearly as fast as they would on a hot summer day standing on the sidewalk at 92nd Place and Western Avenue.

"That's for sure," Frank Patewski said.

The combination of chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, orange sherbet and Palmer House vanilla ice cream has hit the spot for generations, even with the city still in winter's grip.

General Manager Bryan Feltman said there is one more reason to drop by ahead of summer crowds.

The cake rolls are back. They are vanilla ice cream wrapped in chocolate cake.
