LA GRANGE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- If you’re doing all you can to try to keep from contracting coronavirus or any other illness, think about the germs that technicians come across at a smart phone repair shop.Andrew Retzlaff said he handles as many as 30 smart phones a day at the UBreakIFix shop he manages in LaGrange.

Experts say cellphones have more than 20 times more bacteria than toilet seats.“A lot of the times it’s even worse because you’re getting phones that are up to your face, ear. You have all your hair, facial hair, mouth spitting on it and ear in the ear hole. It’s pretty gunky and nasty,” Retzlaff explained.

For years, his shop has had a UV light device to clean phones. Only recently has he begun using it regularly to keep from getting sick.
