(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The possibility of standing plane seats is closer to becoming a reality, with the latest version of the now-infamous “Skyrider” being unveiled at the Paris Air Show.
The new version is called Skyrider 3.0 and has been re-worked by Italian design firm Avio Interiors to spark interest in carriers looking to squeeze as many passengers as possible on to their planes.
Classified as "ultra high density" seating, Skyrider 3.0 is so upright that passengers have to nearly stand to use it. One analyst says it resembles something you might see on a stand-up rollercoaster.
One airline executive says the concept could make sense for ultra-low cost carriers because Skyrider 3.0 seats would make it possible for aircraft to expand capacity by more than 20%.
Not everyone is supportive. Several aviation analysts took to Twitter, claiming it's like sitting in a torture chamber.
"Regulators are really worried about evacuating airplanes. If you had a plane land in the water, as we had with the US Airways flight, could people get out?" wonders DePaul University airlines expert Joe Schwieterman.
"I think though the idea is not to have a whole plane of these, but as a discount option for the real penny pincher."
Only time will tell, but if customers are willing to endure the experience to save money and regulators approve any safety concerns, the Skyrider 3.0 may be coming to a low-cost carrier near you.
