CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- You may have seen pictures online - Chicago’s familiar nighttime skyline with one big exception: Willis Tower.
Willis Tower has really stuck out the last couple of nights - more than the 22nd tallest building in the world would, because it does not have power.
All around Willis Tower, building after building is lit up, giving the skyline its magical glow. But the skyscraper that was the world's tallest until 1998 remains dark, as if being portrayed as a villain in a movie.
Willis Tower has been without electricity since weekend rains caused the Chicago River to pour into its basement, knocking out a ComEd substation.
Online people have been having some fun with pictures of the building, drawing stick arms on it, exaggerating a smiley face near the top, and even juxtaposing that smiley face into Wilson, the volleyball from the Tom Hank's movie Castaway.
A spokesman for building management said river water was being pumped out Wednesday of lower level three. ComEd said the electrical vault is the basement is being inspected and that engineers are working on a plan to begin restoring electricity.
