CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A dog was rescued by police Monday in Lake Michigan on the North Side.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit was called about 10 a.m. for a dog in the water at the Montrose Harbor, a police spokesperson said.

According to Police Marine Unit Sergeant Lucas Wise the dog, named Leyla, was swimming about a mile off Montrose Harbor.

"It was a medium size, maybe 50-pounds, almost a mile out from the shore - in distress, swimming," Wise said. "Officer Carlson related that the dog looked like it was in real bad shape.  It had been out there for awhile and had exerted itself."

Sergeant Wise said Officers William Carlson and Kevin Williams got the dog in, using a pole; and once back safely on shore, she was taken to veterinarian Dr. Eileen Murphy, who said Leyla, a German shepherd mix was basically fine.

A microchip led to Leyla's owner and they were reunited.
