CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A lot of businesses are closed Wednesday because of the dangerously cold conditions. One Evanston business is also closed but not because of the weather.
Backlot Coffee on Central Street is closed Wednesday and Thursday because the coffee shop is expanding.
Owner John Kim says, "we've been here for two years and this was a wall right here and we just busted through the wall last night and doubled the space."
He chuckles when he thinks about others being closed because of the weather when he had plans to be closed Wednesday anyway.
"The timing of this arctic weather was actually pretty good. We were planning to close anyways for the next two days," he said.
Kim is co-owner of another Backlot Coffee in the Old Irving neighborhood on the North Side. He said he got a text from his partner who "threw some coffee up in the air and it vaporized into snow. Coffee colored snow....It's pretty crazy."
Kim and his brother own Brothers K, another coffee shop in Evanston. It was closed Wednesday because of the weather.
