CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- For a decade now, Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream has staged what it calls "Fatal Prom" -- a mock prom night accident, hoping students will get the message.
The Carol Stream Police Department and the Carol Stream Fire Protection District staged Wednesday a DUI fatal crash scene at Glenbard North High School. The presentation is set up in homes to raise awareness among students of the dangers of impaired and distracted driving.
"Nothing is more real than watching it happen before your eyes. This is as close as we can get without actually injuring someone," said high school senior, Alex, who was one of the drivers in the mock scenario.
“As prom approaches, we want to reiterate how devastating the decision to drive impaired or distracted can be. The Carol Stream Police Department is dedicated to preventing senseless injuries and deaths related to traffic crashes. Our hope is that providing this realistic scenario will assist in encouraging Glenbard North High School students to make responsible decisions during prom season and beyond.”
School administrators and police believe the staged scenario has saved multiple lives.
