DEKALB, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Eleven years have passed since a gunman opened fire on a geology class at Northern Illinois University's DeKalb campus, killing five and injuring 19.
WBBM Newsradio's Bob Roberts reports that a memorial is scheduled on Thursday.
Bells will ring five times - one for each of the students who died - outside of Cole Hall - where the shooting occurred. The bell will signify a moment of remembrance at 3:06 p.m. Thursday - the moment when the shootings took place at a geology class in one of Cole's lecture halls.
Gunman Stephen Kazmierczak, a former NIU student who had transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, walked on-stage, set a violin case on the floor, pulled out a gun and opened fire. He then took his own life before police could arrive two minutes later.
Cole Hall was closed to the public and originally was slated for demolition. Instead, after much discussion, it was renovated.
