Dog Park

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- After five years of planning, the Chicago Park District cut the ribbon Thursday morning on a new dog park on the South Side.

Until now, the only official dog-friendly areas in city parks were north of 18th Street.

The new 7,100 square foot dog park inside Calumet Park in the East Side neighborhood has a dog-run, a water fountain, and plenty of trees.

Park District Community Relations Manager Maria Stone said the Southeast Chicago Dog Park Committee demonstrated its commitment through fundraising.

"They also need to be committed to maintaining the dog-friendly area through regular cleanups, powerwashing, maintaining the pea gravel," she said.

Dogs must be leashed in the other areas of Calumet Park and those inside the dog-friendly space need to be vaccinated and have their tags.

Other South Side dog parks are in the works for McKinley Park and Bronzeville.
