CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 5-year-old girl was fatally stabbed Saturday morning in East Garfield Park by a woman believed to be her mother, according to neighbors.
Chicago police officers responded to the 3200 block of West Fulton Boulevard around 9:15 a.m. for a call of a person stabbed. When police arrived, Chicago firefighters were already tending to the injured girl, police said.
The girl was then transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Officer Jose Harra said police are still trying to piece together what happened but said a suspect is in custody.
"At this time, all we know is a suspect and the victim were in the house. They may be related," Harra told reporters.
Neighbors said they are related, saying that the 27-year-old suspect is the child's mother and that she has mental health issues.
Police confirmed they have been to the home previous times. Harra said the woman arrested outside of the house did not attempt to run.
