Art on the Mart’s executive director, Cynthia Noble, tells WBBM Newsradio that their latest art installation, Currents of Chicago - A Moving Artwork, is a product of acclaimed Chicago based architecture firm Perkins & Will; and explores what it’s like to live in the city, through designs, patterns, and colors, projected onto the more than 2.5 acre Art Deco façade of the Merchandise Mart. The best views are from the Chicago Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin.
“It’s a piece that explores currents in all sense of the word, particularly in our urban experience,” said Noble.
She says that viewers can think of currents in terms of river flow, the movement of people, and all forms of transportation.
“You can think of currents, in a sense more metaphorically, in the sense of change and looking for new paths forward,” Noble adds.
Currents of Chicago – A Moving Artwork, from Art on the Mart, set to the pulse of Chicago house music by West Side producer Aniko Thomas, also known as Niko The Great.
It’s the world’s largest public art display, free and open to the public, with 9 pm nightly shows through July 6. More information can be found through the Art on the Mart website.
