An agent from the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms opened fire at a robbery suspect Thursday morning on the Far South Side.

It happened during an ATF operation in the CPD 5th district near the 109000 block of South Doty Avenue, Mark Kavanagh, an ATF spokesperson, said in an email.

The agent fired at a suspect during an attempted robbery, Kavanagh said, citing preliminary information.

No law enforcement personnel or suspects were injured but three suspects are in custody, and charges are pending, according to Kavanagh.

Chicago police referred inquiries about the shooting to ATF.

Thursday afternoon, evidence technicians were seen photographing the inside of a gray Chevrolet Cruze sedan that remained smashed in the Walmart parking lot. Crime scene tape whipped around in the wind.

One witness, who didn’t want to be identified for fear of retribution, said a vehicle carrying police officers had hit another gray vehicle in the parking lot around 11:30 a.m. That’s when the witness said they heard loud sounds they thought could have been gunfire. They saw at least three people taken into custody, though it was unclear if those were the same three Kavanagh was referring to.
