A Dyer, Indiana man has won a coveted spot to perform at a Frank Sinatra singing competition in late crooner’s hometown of Hoboken, New Jersey next month.
He's always introduced on stage as “The One and Only William Sayre.”
The 51-year-old singer is among just ten chosen for the “My Way: Sinatra Sing Off” at Sinatra Park sponsored by the Hoboken Historical Museum and the city.
"I'm blown away," he said in a phone interview. "I like to do singing competitions and in particular I can do, like, the crooning."
He’ll be singing “My Way.”
"The song My Way is an anthem, it's almost like a good masterpiece," he said. "There's such a build-up in the whole thing, that song is such an iconic, I mean, my uncle told me, he's like, 'they play that at people's funerals.'"
He said he's humbled by the opportunity and is happy the organizers chose that song for him.
Sayre is a past winner of a Northwest Indiana Idol competition.
The competition on August 13th will be livestreamed by the Hoboken Historical Museum on YouTube.
There will be local watch parties at Tony’s Bar in Dyer and L Squared in Schererville.
