Thirty years ago, the world was introduced to the iconic sitcom "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air." Three decades later, the beloved family is reliving an era of TV history with a touching reunion of the cast.
The reunion special, which aired on HBO MAX, was filmed in September to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the NBC comedy.
On Wednesday night, the well-remembered cast members stood on the original set of the 1990s hit tv-series, and greeted each other with big smiles and open arms. The reunion gave the cast an opportunity for healing, and allowed for unresolved friction between the stars to finally be put to rest.
Smith, 52, has had a tense relationship with Janet Hubert, who played Aunt Viv in the long-running family comedy. The feud began after Hubert's departure from the show after three seasons in 1993.
After her exit, Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role. Reid was also joined her co-stars in the reunion. Smith called both of them "two queens."
During the very candid conversation, Smith admitted that he "was not sensitive" to Hubert’s situation outside of the studio.
Hubert expressed, “Home life was not good at all. I was no longer laughing, smiling, joking because there were things going on that nobody new about.”
During season three of the family-friendly show, Hubert became pregnant and struggled with an abusive marriage.
Smith reflected on his actions in the past and admitted, “I don’t want to be that guy, you know? I go out in the world and talk about understanding and human relationships and then have somebody that I haven’t spoken to in 27 years.”
The actor continued, “I’m so happy we were able to make the reconciliation and I hope other people can take something from it.”
Smith told his 50.2 million Instagram followers, " These are the people who made me the man I am today."
Original cast member Alfonso Ribibeiro, who played Carlton Banks, the lovable character that gained popularity for his signature swing-style dance move, also participated in the reunion.
Actors Tayana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Joseph Marcell, and DJ Jazzy Jeff were also in attendance.
The reunion ended with a tear-jerking celebration and dance along. Fans were hit with nostalgia as they heard the all-too-familiar theme song at the end.
As the special ended, Smith joked to his co-stars, “See you in 10 years.”
