Former Alderman Cardenas joins race for mayor

Has a plan to pay parents for involvement

Former Alderman Cardenas joins race for mayor

Former Chicago Alderman George Cardenas, now a Commissioner on the Cook County Board of Review, is joining what’s expected to be a crowded field of candidates vying to be the next mayor.

Cardenas was surrounded by a small group of supporters at a manufacturing company across the street from McKinley Park in the 12th Ward where he served as Alderman for nearly 20 years.

He said he would focus on improving the lives of Chicagoans.

“The city is carrying billions in uncollected debt while taxpayers are being asked for more and more,” he said.

“It is a management problem, it is a governance problem, it is a competence problem.”

He said, “Chicago does not need magical thinking, it needs serious management.”

Cardenas said part of his focus on public safety will be what he calls “paid parenting participation for structured engagement.”

He wants to pay parents for involvement, without specifics, so far.

But he said it could be paid for with the savings from cleaning up mismanagement.
