Heat and humidity in Chicago area can cause pavement to buckle

The heat is wreaking havoc on pavement throughout the Midwest.

Extreme heat causes pavement to expand.

And when it runs out of expansion room it can buckle or blow out, causing uneven surfaces.

Sometimes they're significantly uneven, creating potentially dangerous situations for drivers.

Humidity is also a factor.

"We've had a fair number of them and we anticipate more with the extreme heat and humidity, it looks like its going to continue for a while," said Paul Wappell, with the Illinois Department of Transportation.

"We have crews monitoring the situation, they're ready to respond, they have responded. Most of the time they're pretty simple to fix," he said.

He said it can happen with asphalt or concrete surfaces.

Route 34 in Plano and Theodore Street in Joliet had to have emergency repairs because of buckling.

Wappell says anyone who witnesses heat-damaged pavement should alert IDOT or local authorities.

IDOT crews out repairing these buckles are experiencing very intense heat, working on road surfaces.
