A Chicago law firm is calling out the owner of a local nursing home for failing to pay a record wrongful death jury verdict and more than two dozen other settlements.
The jury verdict – more than 12-million dollars – was against the Lakeview Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and its management company, Infinity Healthcare Management of Illinois.
The owner, Moishe Gubin, is also CEO of Strawberry Fields Real Estate Investment Trust.
Owner of 140 nursing homes in 10 states, including Lakeview.
The Levin and Perconti law firm represented the family of a woman who died of what attorneys argued, were treatable wounds that became severely infected.
“This was an extremely preventable injury,” said attorney Paul Connery. “The treatment for this type of injury is routine, common in nursing homes.”
The victim, 79-year-old Shirley Adams, was the mother of five children.
She died in 2023.
The verdict was reached last November.
Connery says Gubin refuses to pay and that he has not paid 30 abuse and neglect settlements totaling more than 4 million dollars.
A Cook County judge has threatened to hold him in contempt.
The law firm alleges that he “intentionally and severely” underinsures nursing homes “to avoid accountability.”
In this case, just 250-thousand dollars per incident.
Gubin has not responded to our request for comment.
