CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Higher food costs and people still struggling financially means a turkey giveaway in Aurora filled up within an hour of the announcement Sunday.

The city of Aurora said 1,600 people signed up for the free turkeys within 45 minutes.

The executive director of the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry Shannon Cameron said she is not surprised.

"People are still suffering the ramifications of the pandemic. People are still perhaps not fully employed or underemployed. Certainly inflation, supply chain issues — all of that has kind of come to a head and then the holidays. People just have you know more costs,” Cameron told WBBM Newsradio.

She said COVID-19 forced local food pantries to collaborate last year and make the event a drive thru where they served 400% more people.

Cameron said registration is full as is the waiting list for the giveaway Saturday and registration for 265 hot meals they’re giving out on Thanksgiving morning.
