(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One person was killed and six Western Illinois University students were among 10 other people injured in a shooting at an off-campus party early Saturday morning, according to the Macomb Police Department.
Authorities said officers arrived at a home located on the 500 block of North Johnson Street just before 2 a.m. Officials said they believe an altercation began and led to the gunfire. One person was declared dead at the scene, and the 10 others who were shot were transported to McDonough District Hospital.
In a letter to students, faculty, staff and the campus community, WIU President Guiyou Huang wrote that all university athletics events, as well as several other campus events, would be canceled.
Students who need mental health assistance were encouraged to contact the University Counseling Center, and faculty were encouraged to contact the Employee Assistance Program.
Police did not release the identity of the person who died, nor did MPD release the identities of those wounded in the shooting.
MPD said the shooting remained under investigation. Anyone with video or photos from the party were encouraged to share that information with police by emailing citizenconcerns@macombpolice.com.
