Chicago Police said officers arrived at the four-unit apartment building on Independence Boulevard, just south of Roosevelt Road shortly before 11:30 p.m. There, they found the residence engulfed in flames.

Twenty people, including five under the age of 18, were uprooted. A 59-year-old man was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital with chest pain and smoke inhalation, police said. He was described in good condition.

Warming buses were provided to the displaced residents.
