CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Just how far would you go to get out of a speeding ticket?
A new study posed that question to drivers in Illinois and nationwide.
On average, 19% of drivers said they would attempt to bribe their way out of a speeding ticket if they were able to get away with it.
Illinois' numbers were right in line with the national average, with one in five drivers admitting to considering bribery to steer clear of a citation.
The poll from Gunther Volkswagen Daytona Beach also found that the average driver would pay about $45 in hopes of keeping their motor vehicle report clean and avoid a fine.
And that one in four American drivers believes paying a bribe should only be a criminal offense if it's accepted.
