(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Thirteen people have been displaced, and two cats were found dead after a three-alarm fire in Evanston Thursday morning, the city’s fire department announced.
No other injuries were reported.
Authorities said about 8:30 a.m., the Evanston Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a fire in a multi-residential, three-story structure in the 900 block of Judson Avenue.
Upon arrival, firefighters were faced with “heavy fire” on the third floor of the building. Officials said the firefighters immediately called for additional resources.
Evanston firefighters, as well as those from neighboring communities, were able to bring the fire under control within the first hour, the department said.
Residents were able to exit the building safely, but search and rescue crews found two cats who died in the fire.
Fire department officials said the American Red Cross was notified to assist anyone displaced in the fire and would be offering mass care and shelter services.
