GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Northwest Indiana officials plan to have more to say later Monday about the murder of a 70-year-old man who is in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said 70-year-old Wallace Broadnax was shot to death early Saturday morning at a gas station. According to the Northwest Indiana Times, two juveniles have been arrested for the crime.
"I am heartbroken and disgusted by the senseless brutality that took the life of Wallace Broadnax, a dedicated, lifelong member of our community," Prince told the NWI Times.
"I have reached out to the family and loved ones of Mr. Broadnax, and the city of Gary stands ready to support them in any way we can."
Broadnax was on the Roosevelt High School basketball team that won the state championship in 1968. He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.
He went on to serve the Gary Fire Department for 25 years and had worked for a funeral home for the past 36 years.
Mayor Prince is scheduled to talk more about the incident at 2 p.m. Monday. He'll be joined by Gary Police Chief Brian Evans, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., and Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter.
