LAKE COUNTY (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A tragic crash on the water in Lake County last night left two teenage girls dead.
It happened about 5:15 p.m. on Lake Marie, part of the Chain O'Lakes. A 16-year old girl from California was driving a Yamaha WaveRunner with a 13-year old girl from Long Grove as her passenger.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the WaveRunner was moving quickly toward a boat near the channel to Grass Lake and collided with the Sea Ray cabin cruiser.
Officials said the 55-year old Antioch man operating the boat could not get out of the way.
The two girls, both wearing life vests, were thrown unconscious into the water. People on the boat pulled them out and called emergency responders.
The girls were pronounced dead at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville
No one on the boat was injured.
