CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Police are warning the public to walk in groups and not carry large amounts of cash after taking in reports of some 20 armed robberies Sunday.
A police community alert outlined 14 armed robberies in less than three hours, starting just after 5 a.m. on the Lower West Side, going north to Hermosa and ending before 8 a.m. in Garfield Park. Police claimed the suspects pointed guns against the heads of their victims as they demanded wallets, phones, purses and cash.
In that last case, police said a 49-year-old woman was parking her car near 5th and Sacramento when she was held up by three robbers in a black SUV, one of whom shot her in the stomach. She was taken to the hospital in good condition.
Police believe four young men in a black Audi Q5 are responsible, while the department recovered a white BMW sedan wanted for three more armed robberies by four males at around 5:30 p.m. in the Deering District on the Southwest Side.
