Ronald McDonald House Charities will be the grand marshal of the 2024 South Side Irish Parade. It will take place March 17 in Beverly.
“We are so honored to be recognized this year,” said Ronald McDonald House Charities CEO Holly Buckendahl.
A member of the Chicago Stockyard Kilty Band, the city’s oldest bagpipe band at more than 100 years, opened the ceremony held at Smith Village.
A senior community located on the parade route, Smith Village, was named the parade honoree.
Kevin McGee, CEO of Smith Senior Living, said they’re celebrating 100 years. He noted this was originally the Oakhaven Old People’s Home.
“Original founders include Jane Addams from Hull House and the famous attorney Clarence Darrow,” McGee said.
He said at the time Western Avenue was a gravel road.
The South Side Irish Parade has become the largest community parade outside of Ireland.
