SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – Two men and a teenage boy have been charged in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old in south suburban South Holland, authorities announced Sunday.
Davell Holden, 16, was shot and killed Aug. 2 near 160th Street and Drexel Avenue while visiting his girlfriend. Investigators say the shooting was a case of mistaken identity and that Holden closely resembled the intended target.
Javan Moore, 21, of Phoenix, Illinois is charged with first-degree murder and is accused of being the shooter, according to the village. Demon Smith, 20, also of Phoenix, and a 16-year-old boy are each charged with felony murder.
“This was a tragic and sickening incident,” South Holland Mayor Don De Graff said in a statement. “While we are grateful to have made the arrests, we are deeply saddened for Davell’s family and friends. No family should ever experience this kind of loss, and our community stands with them during this difficult time.”
Holden was a student at Thornwood High School and a member of the school’s basketball team. He was preparing to begin his junior year at the time of the shooting.
