Illinois State Police said troopers responded to the outbound Kennedy near Irving Park shortly after 6 a.m. for a report of a shooting.
No injuries were reported.
Starting at about 7:30 a.m., the three left lanes of the expressway were shut down for 19 minutes as police and IDOT personnel looked unsuccessfully for shell casings.
The investigation was moved off the expressway, including looking for any bullet holes in the alleged victim's vehicle.
