GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Gary police are investigating the shooting of a 3-year-old boy that happened early Wednesday.

According to Gary police, the mother of the boy called 911 around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday morning reporting that her son had been shot multiple times in her home in the 1700 block of East 7th Avenue.

"The mother of the child was not in the home at the time. She was at work and the person in charge of the children at the residence is being questioned by investigators at this time," said Gary police Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

Lt. Westerfield said the children's caretaker had first called the mother, who called police and fire services.

Police said the boy had been shot three times and was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Lt. Westerfield was not making public the boy's condition.

The lieutenant said there was at least one other child in the home at the time.

When asked if the boy had been playing with a gun in the house, Lt. Westerfield said, "All of that information is under investigation currently."
