CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — For more than four decades, the Shamrock Shuffle has been the traditional kickoff event of Chicago’s running season, and on Sunday, waves of runners enjoyed a sunny, breezy day at Grant Park for this year’s 8K and 2-mile race.

Several thousand runners participated in the event downtown, including Joliet’s Raoul Racundo, who said he was running in the shuffle for his first time.

“I’m just trying to tell myself that I’m ready, because I see so many people here. It’s exciting. It’s what I trained for.”

Racundo said Chicago is one of the greatest cities for runners to enjoy.

Veteran runner Chad Green joined friends in the first wave of the 8K.

“Well, five miles, we do that on almost a daily basis, so it’s almost a walk in the park,” he said. “Look at everybody around us; it’s just for fun.”

The 2024 event included a two-mile walk and a post-race celebration — complete with music and beer.
