(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Kane County authorities are investigating an early morning crash that left five teenagers with what sheriff’s officials described as “life-threatening” injuries.

It happened just before 3 a.m. near Dietrich and Briar Hill Roads in unincorporated Hampshire Township on Saturday.

Officials with the Kane County Sheriff’s Office said an SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

The 16-year-old girl behind the wheel, as well as four passengers all ages 15 and 16 years old, were hospitalized.

It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, officials said.
