A baby in Indiana suffered a heroin overdose, and police are investigating how it happened.
First responders found the 9-month-old child in a car seat inside his home in Lafayette, Ind. The baby was barely breathing and its lips had turned blue.
EMTs on the scene gave the baby a dose of Narcan, and the child began to respond, according to authorities.
“Narcan is a medication specifically used for the emergency treatment of known or suspected opioid overdoses,” the probable cause affidavit said, according to Journal & Courier.
According to a statement taken from the child’s mother, the child had been crawling around the home before being placed in the car seat with a bottle.
Substances were found in the home under a couch near the car seat that filed tested positive for heroin, according to prosecutors.
Police arrested Matthew Joel Shepard, 32, in conjunction with the child’s overdose. Shepard has been charged with possession of heroin, possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, maintaining a common nuisance and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
