SUMMIT, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A French Bulldog found earlier this week in a dumpster in Summit had to be put down Friday after a number of serious health issues were found.
Wendy Elstien is a volunteer with Chicago French Bulldog Rescue. She said that a homeless woman found the dog in a dumpster and then alerted police.
That’s when the rescue got involved. The dog was named Holly. It was clear from the start there were health issues. A thorough examination found she was probably suffering from serious spine and brain conditions, which caused paralysis and blindness.
Elstien believes that the owner of the dog might have decided to toss her in the dumpster, because Holly was injured and they may not have been able to afford proper treatment or healthcare for her.
She said people finding themselves in situations like this need to know that rescues like hers are “judgement-free” alternatives.
"Another spin to this story is that people with animals that need to be surrender and doing the right thing-just the importance of people to have no shame in surrendering their dogs if they can't handle it."
Even though Holly's injuries and health issues made it difficult for her to stay alive, the rescue called her "a Christmas miracle" and now the organization is helping the woman who found the dog. Volunteers raised $1,500 dollars and are putting together some essentials for her.
"It's a beautiful story of someone who had so little to give, but opened here heart to save this dog," Elstien said.
