Workers at a Park Ridge store are putting up the closed sign today…for good.
“We’re all very over the store closing.”
Outside American Science and Surplus here in Park Ridge hangs a sign that reads “everything must go.” Inside, a handful of customers rummage around the shop’s unique, and discounted offerings.
“We’re tired. Yesterday was one hell of a day where we had hundreds of customers.”
Worker Shanoa tells us it’s a lot quieter on the store’s final day of business, which comes a few months after owners raised nearly 200 thousand dollars in hopes of keeping it alive.

“It’s going to be hard for small, cool and unique places to thrive. All that’s going to be left is the big, name brand stores. It’s a shame.”
However, American Science and Surplus isn’t going away entirely: locations remain open in Geneva, as well as Milwaukee.
