(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The call came in to Evanston police about a guinea pig in Mason Park.
"Chances of finding a small rodent in a large park — a medium-size to large park — are pretty slim," said Caitlin Schulien, an animal control warden for Evanston police.
But that’s exactly what Schulien was able to do Tuesday morning.
"He was still there,” she said, “Waiting for somebody to rescue him."
Schulien said her sergeant told her if she was able to find the guinea pig, she'd buy her a caramel macchiato. So, upon Schulien’s successful search, they decided to name the guinea pig "Macchiato."
Macchiato is now at Chicago Exotics Animal Hospital, where Assistant Manager Kim Kelleher said it’s the third or fourth guinea pig they've tried to find a home for so far this year — all apparently abandoned as people return to busy pre-pandemic schedules.
"And the shelters have just been overrun since this has started happening," Kelleher said.
As the weather starts to warm up, she added that they’ll probably see even more. For Macchiato, though, Kelleher said they’d try to find the guinea pig a home.
