GARY, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A long-abandoned train station in Northwest Indiana could be on the verge of seeing new life.
The shell of the train station is visible to drivers on I-90 through downtown Gary, Indiana. The station once served passenger trains on the old New York Central and Baltimore and Ohio railroads, but it has been abandoned since the 1970's.
An effort to turn the abandoned hulk into a mixed use restaurant and cultural center just got a big boost. The preservation group Decay Devils secured nearly 150,000 in grants. Between the grants and the group's own fundraising, they are now halfway to the goal of paying an architect to assess what needs to be done to save the building.
"The next step would just be a doing other studies, which can take up to maybe six months and then redoing the building," said Decay Devils Vice President Lori Gonzalez.
Gary Union Station is on the national register of historic places completed in 1910. It was built out of cast-in-place reinforced concrete.
