Arwady: COVID-19 ‘extremely not over’ in Chicago, about 5,000 testing positive daily

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Close to 5,000 Chicagoans are still testing positive for COVID-19, the vast majority for the omicron variant. Though the number of infected individuals is higher than the city has seen before and down slightly from last week, health officials do not see a trend.

Chicago’s Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said the surge may be flattening and the latest peak may be near but it’s not time to call it yet.

“To the point, our case rate’s extremely high. And, honestly, the difference between 4,793 cases today versus just over 5,000 yesterday, mostly it’s high. I am feeling good about the fact that potentially we are seeing at least some slowing of increase. But, we do need some more days of data to feel more sure about the direction things are heading,” Arwady said.

Chicagoans are being admitted to hospitals at the highest rate ever. Arwady said the vast majority are unvaccinated.

“This is extremely not over,” she said.
