Activists say city is trying to muzzle them during DNC in Chicago

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Despite being denied by the city to march ahead of this summer’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a group of activists say they are not giving up their fight.

Members of Bodies Outside of Unjust Laws: a Coalition for Reproductive Justice and LGBTQ+ Liberation gathered Tuesday to plead their case publicly.

Activist Andy Thayer said the coalition’s march is meant to have a significant impact and send a strong message to Democratic leaders in Chicago and the rest of the nation.

“We need to be expanding our reproductive healthcare,” Thayer said. “We need to be expanding LGBTQ+ rights.”

A final decision is expected later this week, though the group says they plan to march Sunday Aug. 18, regardless.

They say it’s important to take their message directly to delegates attending the DNC and not at an alternative location.
