(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The next few days will be sunny but could pose a challenge for people who are sensitive to poor air quality.

The EPA said conditions will be “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

“Yeah, it looks like we’re starting to get several days in a row where the air quality is sub-par,” says Brian Urbaszewski, director of environmental health programs for the Respiratory Health Association, based in Chicago.

“If you have a child with asthma or if you’re an older person who has COPD or you have any kind of lung or heart disease, it’s probably a good day to take it easy, stay inside, stay hydrated, stay cool.”

Urbaszewski said it’s not really clear whether efforts to curb air pollution is having an impact.

The U.S. has made progress with cleaner cars and moving away from burning coal, but he adds: “The science has found over the last several decades that air pollution causes more impacts at lower levels than we previously knew about.”
