(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The remains of a World War II hero from Chicago’s North Side have been identified, nearly 80 years after his death.
U.S. Army Air Forces 2nd Lt. Walter B. Miklosh was a 21-year-old navigator on a B-29 “Superfortress” that crashed in India after a bombing raid on Japan in June 1944. All 11 crew members aboard were killed.
The remains of many crew members were recovered shortly after the crash, but it wasn’t until 2018 and 2109 that additional human remains and evidence were recovered, according to the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA).
Miklosh's remains were identified earlier this year. They will be buried in Arizona at a later date, officials said.
Miklosh was listed in the 1940 Census as living on the 5900 block of North Francisco with several family members, according to ancestry.com.
