(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – In West Town, a string of armed robberies in the past week has prompted an alderman to ask help from the Cook County Sheriff.

Gilbert Villegas (36th) held a news conference Thursday outside the Cook County Sheriff’s Office outpost, while detailing recent crimes in the area.

He said he has asked Sheriff Tom Dart to increase staffing at the outpost from 9-to-5 to 24/7.

The Chicago Police Department is stretched thin, and sheriff’s police could help fill the gap, Villegas said.

The sheriff's department said they would be interested in meeting with the alderman to discuss his concerns.
