(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago Ald. Brian Hopkins is calling for the city to close a migrant shelter just off the Magnificent Mile, saying crime problems persist in that area.
The Inn of Chicago is just outside of Hopkins' 2nd Ward, but he says he's been hearing from his residents about crime that has spilled over.
"There's a significant increase in narcotics activity. We've also had a number of prostitution arrests and quite a bit of shoplifting," Hopkins said.
He says the police response has been good since he raised those issues three months ago, but it's still a problem.
If the city doesn't want to use McCormack Place as a shelter, then Hopkins says it should move out the 1,300 migrants staying in the former hotel in the most densely populated area of the city.
A contract with the building owners expires at the end of this year.
