CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago alderman wants the City Council to support efforts by some Starbucks workers to unionize.

Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez (25th Ward), one of the Democratic Socialists on the City Council, led a demonstration outside a Starbucks coffee shop in Logan Square, at Logan Boulevard and California. He’s calling on the City Council to approve a resolution supporting the Starbucks workers' right to unionize.

Fellow Democratic Socialist Ryan Watson praised the Starbucks workers.

"...wages and all the other securities that you are struggling for, you are also struggling for the right to organize and be recognized," Watson said.

City Council members from Minneapolis and Seattle joined the rally by video conference to add their voices of support. They are both Democratic Socialists. Robin Wansley Worlobah is from Minneapolis. Kshama Sawant leads a similar movement in Seattle.

"This has gained incredible momentum, but we have to keep pushing. We cannot get complacent. We cannot afford to take any of this for granted," Sawant said.

Starbucks is facing unionization fights around the country.
