Aldermen say city has ignored encampments that have fueled downtown crime surge

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Two Chicago aldermen called on the city to finally clear out homeless encampments that they say have driven recent crime surges.

A man was shot and killed in Chicago's West Loop overnight at Lake and Clinton Streets, just steps from the viaducts near Ogilvie Transportation Center that have attracted homeless camps, drugs and crime.

It's the second shooting at the same intersection in a month. Initial reports from police is that the latest incident was a drug deal gone wrong.

Alde. Bill Conway, 34th, said a plan to clear the encampments was canceled by the mayor because Conway declined to vote for Johnson Administration initiatives. Conway filed a complaint with the city's inspector general last month about the issue.

Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, said he has long tried to get help from the city to deal with the problem zone.
